What is the distinguishing characteristic of a Freemasons heart? ... Charity
Although not the be all and end all of Freemasonry, charity does play an important part in it. Since time immemorial Freemasons have helped others wherever possible. This can be at an International, national or regional level or two hundred yards up the road.
Contrary to popular belief our charitable work isn’t purely for ourselves! It is true sometimes, should a situation require it, we may help our members and their families. But this is a very rare occurrence.
The Freemasons’ Grand Charity in the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) has donated over £100 Million since 1980 to many different deserving causes. As with all Grand Lodges throughout the world, this sum was and is raised by the voluntary donations of its members.
The Grand Lodge of British Freemasons in Germany (GLBFG) of which, the Keys of Münster is part of, also donates to various charities, sadly we are not in the league of UGLE, but we are significantly smaller in numbers. In 2012 GLBFG using funds collected from its member Lodges, donated £16,400.00 to the Royal College of Surgeons in England.
The Keys of Münster actively supports the GLBFG charity and also supports charities closer to home. Since 1961 we have helped many various local and national organizations. We do not seek or ask for praise or thanks, but we feel it is important that people have an idea of where the money has gone. This is not a comprehensive list but, over the years...
